Call for applications - National Arts Council of South Africa PESP grants 2025-26 Amount: ZAR800K Sign Up for Professional Support (Paid) The National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC) has opened the 6th round of its Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP 6), and is calling on artists and cultural organisations to apply for funding to implement employment-generating projects in the 2025–2026 financial year. The PESP was introduced by the South African government in response to the COVID-19 crisis as a key mechanism for revitalising the creative economy. SAMPRA Development Fund - Music Production Amount: ZAR 120K Sign Up for Professional Support (Paid) Professional recording artists and record companies that are members of the South African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA) can now apply for grants to record new music. The fund will award up to R120 000.00 to successful applicants. Call deadline : 28 March 2024 at 17H00. Eligibility For Grants The SAMPRA Development Fund will consider applications from professional recording artists and record companies that are members of SAMPRA and who wish to record a single or album. Application Deadline Applications can only be lodged during the open window, as determined and announced by the Fund annually. The recording(s) may not have started before the deadline of submission of applications. Decision Deadline The Board of the Fund will decide on the granting of the applications within three (3) months following the last day of submission of applications. The decision of the Board of the Fund on an application shall be final and not reviewable or appealable. Budget The maximum amount an applicant can be awarded by the Fund is One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Rand (R120 000.00) exclusive of VAT, where applicable. The Fund shall not finance more than fifty percent (50%) of the music production’s total budget. Applications must relate only to production costs that constitute the overall budget presented for the envisaged recording project. Production costs include, but not limited to: pre-production studio rental pressing, mixing, and mastering graphic design and/or printing session fees catering and accommodation during recording sessions. Other Sources of Funding The applicant must disclose in the application, other sources of funding secured for the recording project. The Fund will not approve the funding of any recording project if the applicant has not demonstrated that the applicant has secured other sources of funding to allow the recording to proceed as scheduled. Once approved by the Fund, the applicant shall not accept any funding for the same project from any South African-based collective management organisation. Acceptance of funding from another South African-based collective management organisation for the same project shall render the award by the Fund null and void, and the funding shall be withdrawn. Where the applicant receives funding for the project approved by the Fund from another South African-based collective management organisation concurrently with or after the Fund makes payment to the applicant for the project, the Fund shall be entitled to recover all the money paid by the Fund to the applicant for that project. For avoidance of doubt, South African-based collective management organisations include AIRCO, CAPASSO, IMPRA, RiSA AV (RAV), and SAMRO. Application Procedures The application form must be completed in full and in English. Incomplete applications will not be considered. No application fee is payable. The applicant may be requested to provide supplementary documentation and information from time to time for processing the application. Failure to provide such information within a reasonable time frame may deem the application to be unsuccessful without further notice. The application form and all information submitted by the applicant will be retained for record and audit purposes and will not be returned to the applicant. Applications received after the closing date for applications will not be considered. Vetting Procedures Upon receipt of an application, the Fund will conduct a preliminary screening and may seek clarification or supplementary information from the project applicant. Failure to provide such information within a reasonable time frame will deem the application to be unsuccessful without further notice. The project applicant may be required to attend assessment panel meetings to present their applications and answer questions. Assessment Criteria The Fund Board shall select grant recipients based on the individual merits of each application. The Fund reserves the right to reject an application on grounds, including, but not limited: applications that are incomplete or contain incorrect information or fail to comply with the requirements set out in these Rules; or a petition is presented, or a proceeding is commenced, or an order is made, or a resolution is passed for the winding up, or bankruptcy of the project applicant; or a false, inaccurate or incomplete statement or misrepresentation is contained in the application or a promise of performance is made knowingly or recklessly that it will not be able to fulfil or deliver such promise or performance; or the project applicant is in default of its obligation(s) under other Project Agreements with the Fund. An application will not be considered if the applicant was funded for music production in the last twelve months. Project Agreement If an application is approved, a Provisional Offer Letter will be sent to the applicant. The Provisional Offer Letter will set out the amount of funding support to be offered, as well as the Terms and Conditions applicable to the funding. The successful applicant will be required to sign and return the acceptance of the Provisional Offer Letter to the Fund within the period specified therein (“Offer Period”). The Fund shall be deemed to have withdrawn the offer to make the proposed funding support to a successful applicant if the Fund does not receive the duly signed acceptance of offer on or before the expiry of the Offer Period, as set out in the Provisional Offer Letter. Disbursement of Approved Funding Support The first instalment will only be processed after the Project Agreement has been duly signed and the project applicant has submitted all the required documents. The approved funding support will be disbursed by instalments on satisfactory performance of appropriate milestones, and strictly in accordance with the terms and conditions as set out in the Project Agreement. The Fund reserves the right to withhold any further payment to the project if some money cannot be accounted for, or if there is any delay in submission of the completion report or the Completion Report does not comply with the Fund’s requirements. Finished Product The beneficiary shall provide progress reports to the Fund and shall complete the recording project within the timelines stated in the project agreement. Fund will receive at least one copy of the finished product within three months following the creation of the musical product. Should the beneficiary not comply with the terms and conditions of the grant, the Fund reserves the right to recover the money disbursed as a grant from the member’s SAMPRA royalty payments. SAMPRA royalties will, therefore, be withheld until the amount granted has been fully repaid. Publicity And Acknowledgment The project applicant shall acknowledge the funding support from the Fund and SAMPRA in all its publicity/media events as well as in publications (including but not limited to press releases, promotional literature, websites, etc.) issued to promote the project. Successful applicants shall be required to include the SAMPRA and Fund logos in all music productions created with financial support from the Fund. The logos are available upon request at info@samprafund.co.za . However, SAMPRA and the Fund reserve the right to require the project applicant to immediately cease and desist from using any promotional materials in which any reference to SAMPRA and the Fund is found. The following disclaimer must also be included in any publications and media events related to the funded project – “SAMPRA and the SAMPRA Development provide funding support to the project only, and do not otherwise take part in the project. Any opinions, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in these materials/events (or by members of the project team) are those of the project organisers only and do not reflect the views of SAMPRA and/or the SAMPRA Development Fund.” The project applicant shall provide the Fund with details of the project achievements, including successful marketing and commercialisation of the project deliverables and awards. Effectively, this means that the beneficiary shall remain a member of SAMPRA for the world and without any exclusions from representation in any territory. Prevention of Bribery or Kickbacks The project applicant shall advise their employees, subcontractors, agents and other personnel who are in any way involved in the project that they are not allowed to offer to or solicit or accept from any person any money, gifts or advantage in the conduct of or in relation to the project. The offer of an advantage to an employee of the Fund or of SAMPRA or Fund Director or SAMPRA Director with a view to influencing the approval of an application is a criminal offence. Any such offer by any of the project member(s) or agent(s) will render the application null and void, and may result in criminal charges being instituted against such person(s). Festival Connect recognises the transformative power of festivals to shape communities, catalyse artistic innovation, and social impact, and facilitate international collaboration across Sub-Saharan Africa and the UK arts sector. Festival Connect facilitates connections, exchanges, and showcases contemporary arts between festivals across SSA and the UK. In 2024/5 the Festival Connect Fund is seeking submissions of interest from festivals across art forms including interest to seek applications across dance, theatre and music. We acknowledge the broad diversity of festivals and in this regard welcome applications from festival organisations operating either annual, triennial, or biennial festival programmes. Deadline 1 April 2024 Objectives Festival Connect aims to Create new opportunities for SSA-based festivals that can lead to future creative collaboration, co-commissions and partnership projects. Support a broad range of festival making and artistic expressions including Festivals engaged with the transmission of cultural heritage. Facilitate mobility for festivals and festival leaders within SSA and UK (Professional Development, Exchange, Presentation) Build new cross-regional collaborations focused on access to the market and the potential of festivals in bridging cultures in SSA and with the UK arts sector. Fes Develop data-driven innovation and research into the festival sector across SSA and the UK – to inspire innovations from creators in artistic work, audience experiences, or research products and services that use/generate data. Improve the festival value chain, targeting tour-ready work, festival management and networks including encouraging space for experimentation with creative technology (digital festivals included) to develop new experiences. Strands There are three bands of funding available. Band A- for Grants up to £10,000. Band B – For Grants of £10,000 - £20,000. Band C- For Grants of £20,000- £40,000 (festivals requiring the maximum of £40,000 must demonstrate their capacity and needs in the area of artform development and production (e.g. co-commissioning, producing, etc.) Requirements Your proposal value should be between £10,000 – £40,000 (or the equivalent in local currency) A confirmed partnership or booking between festivals, organisations or artists. Proposals must be festival led.your proposal must clearly demonstrate how proposed activities connect to the Festival Connect ambition to support Festival connections, exchange and showcasing contemporary arts between festivals across SSA and the UK including (In 2024 we are open to applications from festivals across art forms including interest to seek applications across dance, theatre and music. If you are proposing to programme artists, the artist needs to come from the reciprocating country (i.e. UK or SSA) The activity should take place between May 2024 and April 2025 The festivals involved should have presented a minimum of three iterations of their festival. Demonstrates sound and effective festival and financial management, ensuring the project proposed is feasible. Your project must connect with an 18-35-year-old audience. Artists programmed must be between 18 and 35 years old - So that more SSA and UK 18-35-year-olds have access to take part, collaborate and showcase their creative work. Open Call: Spaces of Culture fund 2025 Amount: € 50K Sign Up for Professional Support (Paid) Cultural and civil society organisations in Sub-Saharan Africa are invited to apply for funding under the Spaces of Culture programme, an initiative designed to enhance cross-continental collaboration between African and European cultural actors. This programme, which forms part of the EU-funded Africa-Europe Partnerships for Culture, seeks to support innovative projects that foster cultural exchange, co-creation, and mutual learning between the two regions. The Spaces of Culture initiative prioritises collaboration, dialogue, and mutual learning between European and local partners in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is a key component of the broader Africa-Europe Partnerships for Culture programme, launched by the European Commission to encourage cooperation between African and European artists, creators, and cultural professionals. Who can apply? Projects need to subscribe to the principles of cultural relations and must go beyond the projection and promotion of (the diversity of) European culture in Sub-Saharan Africa. Project activities should demonstrate a deeper understanding of these principles by practising mutual listening and learning, engaging in dialogue, co-creation, and joint capacity building with all partners involved. Projects must take place between September 2025 and August 2026. They can take any format, focusing on arts, creative industries, digitalisation, education, gender, heritage, human rights, social inclusion, sports, sustainability, tourism, youth, and others. Project proposals must include a minimum of three full EUNIC members (with possible exceptions in countries with limited EUNIC presence), three key local cultural and/or civil society partners, and involvement from EU Delegation(s) in the country(ies). Financial support Applicants can request up to EUR 50,000 for project implementation. Co-funding from project partners or third parties (excluding EU Delegations) is required at a minimum of 5% of the requested grant amount. Example: For a grant request of EUR 50,000, co-funding must be at least EUR 2,500. Pre-payment of 80% of the awarded grant will be made before implementation.
