The Africa-Europe Partnerships for Culture is inviting applications for Visual Arts Lot 2: Grants for Collaborative Research and Critical Discourse, supporting team-based projects that generate, develop and share knowledge about the visual arts across Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe
The grant supports teams working across visual arts research, criticism, curation, art history and related fields to investigate visual art practices, histories, contexts and ecosystems.
Projects should involve rigorous collaborative research and result in a published, archived or otherwise accessible body of critical work.
Funding
Teams can receive up to €4,000 to support research and critical discourse projects over a 10-month period.
Funding can contribute towards the practical costs of collaborative research, including archive access, interviews, research travel, translation, publication and dissemination.
This is not a grant for artistic production, exhibitions, residencies or general capacity building. The focus is on research that produces meaningful knowledge and contributes to broader conversations in the visual arts.
Eligibility
Applications are open to teams of visual arts researchers and professionals based in Sub-Saharan Africa or the European Union.
Teams must include at least two members and may include:
Art historians
Independent researchers
Research-focused curators
Art critics
Archivists
Cultural theorists
Museum professionals and other visual arts research practitioners
The team lead must either be based in Sub-Saharan Africa or demonstrate substantial and ongoing professional engagement with the Sub-Saharan African visual arts sector.
The programme particularly welcomes applications from emerging scholars, women, non-binary people and people with disabilities.
