The Sundance Institute has opened applications for its 2026 Documentary Fund, supporting independent filmmakers developing feature-length documentary films with strong artistic vision and contemporary relevance.
The fund supports cinematic documentaries from around the world that explore urgent social, political, cultural, and human issues through creative and innovative storytelling approaches.
For more than two decades, the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund has provided non-recoupable funding to filmmakers whose work contributes to cultural dialogue, creative experimentation, and social impact.
Funding
The Sundance Institute Documentary Fund provides nonrecoupable grants to selected projects. The fund prioritises films with budgets under $1.2 million USD, excluding distribution and impact expenses.
Programme focus
The fund supports a wide range of aesthetic and storytelling traditions from across the globe and encourages experimentation in form. It is not restricted to specific themes or issues, but remains committed to work that is creative, complex, and culturally relevant.
The fund does not support NGO, advocacy, educational, or branded content films. Historical or biographical films are typically not funded unless they demonstrate clear contemporary relevance or innovation in form.

Contemporary cultural relevance and impact
