Decentralized Pictures (DCP) has launched the Sofia Coppola Short Film Award, a new initiative created in collaboration with celebrated filmmaker Sofia Coppola to recognise and support an emerging filmmaker with a distinct and original creative voice.
The award draws inspiration from Coppola's body of work, known for its dreamlike atmospheres, intentional pacing, and precision with mood and setting, and seeks to identify a filmmaker who brings that same sense of personal, unmistakable vision to their storytelling.
Funding
The selected filmmaker will receive:
$20,000 to produce a short film
Mentoring support
Prints and Advertising (P&A) support (budget to be determined by DCP)
Distribution of the completed film on DCP+
All films must be reasonably producible within the $20,000 budget.
Programme focus
The award seeks filmmakers with a confident visual sensibility, a unique artistic perspective, and an instinct for storytelling that feels personal and distinctly their own. All genres are accepted.
Eligibility
The award is open globally to all filmmakers, regardless of demographics, identities, or backgrounds. All submissions must be in English or include English-language translations of all materials.
How to apply
Applicants must submit:
A short video sample reflecting the filmmaker's unique perspective and storytelling style — a previously produced scene, visual excerpt, or proof of concept
A one-page Project Description or Lookbook describing the film the applicant wishes to produce, including a synopsis and visual references
A submission fee applies. Applicants are also encouraged (though not required) to submit a pitch video covering their background as a filmmaker, what inspired their submission, and their creative influences.
Selection process
The DCP community will shortlist finalists through a transparent voting platform, evaluating unique voice, visual quality, and originality. The final recipient will be selected by Sofia Coppola and the DCP Board.
