The Pulitzer Center AI Reporting Grants support journalists investigating how artificial intelligence and surveillance technologies affect communities around the world.
The programme is looking for in-depth, accountability-focused reporting that examines how AI systems are designed, funded, deployed, and governed, with particular interest in stories that centre communities directly affected by these technologies.
Funding
The grants support the hard costs of reporting, which may include travel, accommodation, meals, local transportation, records requests, data analysis and visualisation, translators, reporting partners and research assistants.
The grant does not provide applicant stipends, staff salaries, equipment purchases or general organisational expenses.
Scope and approach
Applicants must submit a project proposal, publication/distribution plan, preliminary budget, three samples of published work, three professional references and a CV.
Projects must have a clear publication or distribution plan, with letters of interest or commitment from relevant editors or media outlets encouraged.
The programme does not fund books, feature-length films, routine breaking news, advocacy campaigns, start-up seed funding or data projects intended solely for academic research.
Applicants are required to provide a project summary of no more than 250 words, alongside a preliminary budget and distribution plan.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted in English.
Programme focus
Applications are welcomed from writers, photographers, radio producers and filmmakers, including both staff journalists and freelancers.
The programme is particularly interested in reporting on:
AI industry supply chains
Algorithmic and surveillance systems
Environmental impacts of AI
AI and disinformation
AI warfare
AI regulation and governance
Transparency, accountability and corruption
Applications from the Global South are particularly encouraged, including reporting from Africa, Latin America, South Asia and Southeast Asia.
Collaborative reporting projects are also welcome.
Eligibility
The opportunity is open to journalists worldwide, including experienced reporters and emerging journalists.
