The Kofi Annan Foundation has opened applications for the Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize 2026, recognising young leaders working to defend, strengthen, and reimagine democracy worldwide.
The prize highlights youth-led initiatives that promote civic participation, protect fundamental rights, and support inclusive and accountable governance systems.
Funding
The selected winner will receive a USD 10,000 cash prize, alongside a one-year mentorship with a democracy expert.
The prize also includes fully funded participation in the Athens Democracy Forum (29 September – 2 October 2026), including travel and accommodation.
In addition, nine finalists will receive fully funded scholarships to attend the One Young World Summit 2026 in Cape Town (3–6 November 2026), with access to global networks and leadership opportunities.
Eligibility
Applications are open to:
Young leaders aged 18–30
Applicants from any country
Individuals actively engaged in civic, political, or democracy-focused initiatives
Applicants should demonstrate leadership, measurable impact, and a strong commitment to democratic values and inclusive participation.

The prize supports initiatives that contribute to strengthening democracy, including:
Promoting civic participation and inclusive decision-making
Protecting freedom of expression, press, and assembly
Supporting electoral transparency and democratic processes
Strengthening institutions and governance systems
Encouraging dialogue, education, and democratic innovation
