Google Play has opened applications for the Indie Games Fund Africa 2026, a funding initiative designed to help independent game studios across Africa grow their businesses and expand their games on Google Play.
Backed by a USD 1 million fund, the programme provides non-equity funding and hands-on business support to a select group of small game development studios with high-potential indie titles.
Approximately 10 studios will be selected to receive funding to develop, launch, or grow their games on Google Play.
Funding
Approximately 10 studios will receive grants ranging from USD 50,000 to USD 200,000.
Funding is provided without requiring recipients to give up equity, allowing studios to retain full ownership of their business while investing in the growth of their games on Google Play.
Scope and approach
The Indie Games Fund Africa supports independent game studios with commercially promising games that are ready to scale. Funding is intended to help studios strengthen their businesses, expand their audience, and grow their presence on Google Play.
Projects may use the funding to improve and expand existing Android games or to bring games currently available on PC, console, or other mobile platforms to Google Play.
Studios applying with games that are not yet available on Android are encouraged to include plans for porting their titles to the platform.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
Be registered companies based in one of the eligible African countries.
Employ no more than 50 people.
Be independent (indie) game development studios.
Have a high-quality game with strong growth potential.
Eligible countries include Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Central African Republic, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
