The Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (ELDP) provides grants to support the documentation, preservation and sharing of endangered languages around the world.
The programme encourages applications from language community members, local scholars and students, and collaborative, interdisciplinary teams working to document languages and make their documentary materials accessible.
ELDP Small Grants can support fieldwork, pilot projects, preliminary or supplementary research, the completion of existing documentation projects, and other activities that contribute to the documentation of endangered languages.
Funding
Small Grants provide up to €10,000 for projects lasting between 6 and 12 months.
Funding can support activities including:
Fieldwork and language documentation.
Pilot or feasibility projects.
Preliminary or supplementary research.
Completion of documentation projects already underway.
Other activities related to documenting endangered languages.
Field trips are normally expected to form part of Small Grant projects.
Eligibility
Applicants may be individuals or groups interested in documenting an endangered language.
ELDP welcomes applications from:
Language documenters of any nationality.
Members of endangered language communities.
Local scholars and students from the country where the language is spoken or signed.
Collaborative and interdisciplinary teams.
Applicants are normally expected to have experience in language documentation, fieldwork and/or a relevant academic background. However, Small Grants are also intended to encourage innovation, and individuals or groups with a strong interest in endangered language documentation may apply.
Applicants with existing documentation materials, such as audio or video recordings, transcriptions, translations, annotations, lexical databases or word lists, should provide evidence of their work and are encouraged to archive these resources for evaluation.
