Open Call: develoPPP Ventures - Funding for Start-Ups in Africa

The develoPPP Ventures programme has opened its latest call for applications, offering early-stage start-ups operating in select African countries the opportunity to access non-dilutive grant funding to expand their business models and contribute to sustainable development.


The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and jointly implemented by DEG Impulse gGmbH and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.


Funding

Selected start-ups receive €100,000 in non-dilutive, equity-free growth capital.

A 1:1 matching requirement applies, start-ups must secure an additional €100,000 from private commercial investors. This matching capital may be considered if received up to six months prior to applying or committed before final disbursement.


Programme focus

develoPPP Ventures specifically funds innovative, early-stage business models that demonstrate high development relevance and scalability, and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).


The programme targets new business ideas, funding is not available where an established market with competitors already exists locally, though it may be applicable where comparable products or services are not yet available in the target country.


Current target countries

The current call for applications is open to start-ups in the following countries:

  • Ghana

  • Kenya

  • Rwanda

  • South Africa

  • Tanzania


Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • The company must be privately owned and profit-oriented

  • The company must be registered in the target country, or commit to registering there prior to the co-financed growth investment

  • The business model must be innovative with proof of concept and initial revenues already generated

  • The business model must demonstrate high development relevance, scalability, and alignment with the SDGs


The funding contract can only be concluded with a locally registered entity. Funding is provided for the growth strategy in the respective country and must be used within that country.

Applications are submitted and managed via the develoPPP Ventures online platform. The application and selection process is supported by a team of local experts available to answer questions.
