The AlterCiné Foundation Documentary Grants applications are open and support filmmakers from the Global South developing documentary projects that engage with themes of rights, freedoms, peace, justice, equality, and respect for differences.
The foundation primarily supports feature-length documentaries in the early stages of development and is known for backing socially engaged films such as 5 Broken Cameras, Dear Mandela, and Tempestad.
Each year, several grants are awarded to filmmakers seeking to tell stories that challenge dominant narratives, amplify underrepresented voices, and contribute to social change.
Funding
The foundation awards several grants annually, ranging from CAD 5,000 to CAD 10,000, to support the production of documentary projects.
There are no application fees.
Scope and approach
The AlterCiné Foundation supports documentary projects that critically examine contemporary issues and give voice to communities, individuals, and perspectives that are often overlooked or excluded.
The foundation particularly seeks films that question prevailing assumptions, stand alongside vulnerable and marginalized communities, and encourage reflection on peace, justice, equality, and human rights.
Projects may be produced in the filmmaker's language of choice, provided they align with the foundation's mission and values.
