The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) has opened applications for its 2026 Conservation Grants Programme, supporting projects that strengthen the protection, sustainability, and long-term conservation of Africa's cultural and natural heritage.
Established in 2006 by the African Union and UNESCO, AWHF works to support the effective conservation and management of World Heritage properties across the continent while addressing the underrepresentation of African sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The funding is specifically aimed at the conservation and management of heritage sites, actual places that have cultural, historical, archaeological, architectural, or natural significance.
Funding
Applicants are required to submit a detailed budget in US dollars outlining the costs associated with each project activity. The grant will only cover expenses directly related to project implementation.
Applicants should also indicate any financial or in-kind contributions from the State Party and other funding partners.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants include:
Government institutions responsible for the management and protection of World Heritage Sites.
Civil society organisations working in formal partnership with the relevant government institution.
Project proposals should address conservation challenges affecting the selected heritage property. Additional consideration may be given to projects that:
Respond to issues identified in State of Conservation reports and World Heritage Committee decisions.
Promote entrepreneurship and youth development initiatives linked to heritage sites.
Address sustainability challenges at World Heritage properties.
Improve accessibility and interpretation through digital technologies.
Support preparation for inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
