Call for applications - SAMRO Music Creation Support Fund 2026

Amount:

ZAR25K

The Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) has opened applications for the 2026 edition of its Music Creation Support Fund (MCSF), with R3 million set aside to support the creation of new, original musical works by its members. Now in its sixth year, the MCSF will provide grants of up to R25,000 each to 120 Full and Associate Members of SAMRO.

Launched in 2021 as part of SAMRO’s flagship Corporate Social Investment (CSI) portfolio, the MCSF is designed to enable composers and music creators to produce new work that can generate income and strengthen their presence in the music industry. Since its inception, SAMRO has invested R13.5 million into the programme, expanding the number of annual beneficiaries from 100 to 120 in 2024—a commitment that continues in 2026.

Focus on originality, access and equity

The MCSF supports the creation of new and unpublished works, including compositions that have not yet been performed publicly or broadcast. Eligible projects may include original songs, EPs, albums, scores, or music videos. The fund’s objective is not only to support artistic output, but also to encourage long-term career sustainability for composers and creators.

To date, the majority of successful applicants have come from Gauteng, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal. In 2026, SAMRO is actively encouraging more submissions from underrepresented provinces to promote equitable access across the country.

The organisation also continues to monitor demographic trends in participation. After a notable increase in female applicants in 2023—from 17% in 2022 to 36%—SAMRO has acknowledged the need for ongoing outreach to ensure broader gender diversity in future funding cycles.

Eligibility and selection

The MCSF is open to SAMRO Full and Associate Members. These members are classified as earning members who qualify to attend and vote at the Annual General Meeting, and have access to member benefits such as the SAMRO Retirement Annuity Fund and the SAMRO Funeral Benefit.

Applicants who have already received support from the fund in the past three years are discouraged from reapplying, as the initiative aims to broaden access to members who have not yet benefited.

Submissions will be adjudicated by an independent, multi-disciplinary panel of industry professionals. Selection will be based on:

  • Originality of the proposed work

  • Feasibility of the work plan and budget

  • Potential for artistic and commercial success

All decisions made by the adjudication committee are final.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by 31 October 2025. Late applications will not be considered.
